Chiropractic
Chiropractic is a health care profession that focuses on disorders of the musculoskeletal system and nervous system. Spinal joints that aren’t moving or aligned correctly can affect nearby nerves and muscles. Chiropractic adjustments add motion to these restricted or misaligned joints, reducing nervous system disruption, improved joint mobility and reducing tight muscles. Adjustments are most often performed with a brief massage to loosen tight muscles in the area followed by gentle manual adjusting. Instrument-assisted adjustments may also be utilized depending on the patient’s condition.
Spinal Decompression
Spinal decompression is a therapy which places a specific and controlled stretch to either the neck or low back. This gentle, non-surgical therapy reduces pressure on the joints and discs through the application of a distractive stretch which will alleviate pain associated with disc bulges, herniations or other degenerative conditions such as degenerative disc disease. Spinal decompression may also be utilized to address neck pain, lower back pain, tingling or numbness in the arms or legs or other nerve impingements. It may also be used for patient who cannot tolerate manual manipulation of the spine for various other factors such as a previous surgery.
Acupuncture
Acupuncture uses fine, sterile needles to improve circulation of “chi” or energy that moves throughout the body in a continuous flow. Specific acupuncture points may be used to correlate with a more systemic complaint or may be used locally to address complaints that are more musculoskeletal in nature such as trigger points. Common conditions treated in our office include headaches, muscle trigger points, bursitis, shin splints, tendinitis, SI joint dysfunction, seasonal allergies, stress/anxiety and vertigo.
EMS Therapy
Electric Stimulation Therapy (EMS) is a therapy that involves low levels of electrical impulse delivered to injured and painful tissues. Electrical impulses are transmitted to specific areas of the by electrodes placed on the skin. EMS stimulates the body to release is natural pain relievers called endorphins. It also stimulates circulation by contracting and relaxing muscles which assist the body in eliminating waste from injured and painful tissues. EMS can be prescribed specifically for pain relief and reduction of inflammation and muscle spasms. It is typically used in conjunction with moist heat in more chronic conditions or the application of ice in acute conditions. Other conditions may use a combination of ultrasound therapy and EMS to treat muscular trigger points.
Ultrasound Therapy
Ultrasound therapy is a form of deep heat and vibratory therapy created by sound waves. When ultrasound is applied to injured or painful tissues, the ultrasound waves create a deep heating effect which will decrease pain, inflammation and muscle spasm. The vibration also improves circulation of the treated area which accelerates the healing process by delivering more oxygen and nutrients to the area as well as assisting in the removal of cellular waste. Therapeutic ultrasound will also accelerate the recovery rate of injured tissues without adding strain. Other conditions may use a combination of ultrasound and electric stimulation therapy to treat muscular trigger points.
